Three Easy Ways Facility Managers Can Save on Energy During Summer
Commercial buildings in Harrisburg rely on HVAC systems that run for long hours during peak summer conditions, which makes small efficiency issues turn into higher operating costs if they are not addressed early.

1. Thermostat and schedule tuning

Most buildings run cooler and longer than occupants actually need. A few small adjustments create outsized savings.

  • Raise cooling setpoints by two to three degrees during occupied hours. This often saves three to five percent per degree.

  • Widen deadbands so equipment is not short cycling.

  • Use aggressive unoccupied schedules for evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Pre‑cool only when conditions actually require it.

2. Reduce heat load before it reaches the HVAC

Every BTU you keep out of the building is a BTU your rooftop units do not have to fight.

  • Shade windows with blinds, film, or temporary tint.

  • Keep doors closed in loading docks, kitchens, and high‑traffic areas.

  • Turn off or schedule internal heat sources like lighting and equipment.

  • Seal obvious infiltration points around doors and docks.

3. Improve airflow with simple maintenance

Restricted airflow forces compressors and fans to work harder.

  • Replace dirty filters. Clogged filters can increase fan energy by ten to twenty percent.

  • Clean condenser coils. Dirty coils can raise energy use by up to thirty percent in peak cooling.

  • Tune VFDs on supply and return fans to match actual occupancy.

  • Verify economizers open when outdoor air is favorable.
